The rule of thumb for long-haired dogs? Groom a little. Groom often. Whether your long-haired dog is mini or mighty, their long locks need regular attention. While daily brushing sessions don’t have to always be full-blown (pun intended), a little TLC each day will help deter pests from moving in and mats from forming. Plus, it’s a great way to build in focused bonding time with your dog. Below, we’ve found some of the best brushes for dogs with long hair, along with some extra accessories (including a blow dryer). But first, let’s take a look at the different types of long-haired dogs.

Long-parted coat dog

These are dogs with coats that fall in an even part down their backs. Eight dog breeds fall into this category: Afghan Hound, Lhasa Apso, Maltese, Skye Terrier, Shih Tzu, Silky Terrier, Tibetan Terrier, and Yorkshire Terrier.

Hot tip: To help keep an even part, there’s a nifty trick. Place a comb just at the top of your dog’s eyes. Starting at the middle of their head, move the comb along the middle of the body to the base of the tail. This should help keep the part in place!

Long-coated small dog

Although these dogs may be considered lapdogs, their coats still get dirty and can benefit from regular brushing. It’s also common to clip back their “eye curtains” and undersides—both places where longer hair can become a hassle.

Breeds in this category include Havanese, Chinese Crested, Pekingese, and Pomeranian.

Long-coated large dog

While these larger dogs might consider themselves lapdogs too, many are active and energetic working breeds—meaning they’re more prone to running around outside than venturing into your arms. Because of their higher activity level, they definitely need regular brushing.

Breeds include Bearded Collie, Chow Chow, Cocker Spaniel, Irish Setter, Newfoundland, Old English Sheepdog, Saint Bernard, and Samoyed.

Whether your dog’s hair hangs to the floor in thin, silky curtains or tends to be more coarse and curly, regular grooming will keep their long locks in tip-top shape. Here are three of the best brushes (and a couple of useful tools) for dogs with long hair.

dog grooming tool with stainless steel teeth

A stainless steel comb is the first tool you’ll want to invest in for your long-haired dog. Not only does it help with maintaining a part, but it’s also great for detangling longer hair. This comb comes in two different sizes and tine configurations, giving you options based on the size of your pup and their specific hair type. A grippy handle and a convenient design with close and wide-spaced tines offer extra control and comfort.

Hertzko Self-Cleaning Dog Slicker Brush

Slicker brushes are great for dogs with long hair because they go deep into the coat to remove dead, stray hair that can cause tangles. The slicker head on this brush is ideal because it isn’t too big, making it easier to use on smaller dogs. It’s also convenient for getting into harder-to-reach spots where mats are likely to occur. A big bonus, the self-cleaning head empties hair with just the touch of a button!

Chris Christensen oval dog brush

A pin brush makes for a great finisher, smoothing and shining your long-haired dog’s lovely locks. Made of beechwood, this brush offers a lightweight but durable design. The pins are also coated at the ends, so they massage rather than scratch the skin—helping to evenly distribute healthy oils.

Best Tools for Dogs with Long Hair

Regularly brushing your long-haired dog will help ensure they look and feel their best. But all that long hair can also present some challenges. Here are some added tools that can help you groom your Rapunzel.

TropiClean Sweet Pea Tangle Remover Spray

All that hair and all that brushing can easily create static. A moisturizing spray can help cut down on aggressively clingy hair. If you live in an arid climate, a moisturizing spray can also help keep your dog’s skin from developing dandruff. Either way, this can be a helpful tool for dogs with long hair, making brushing much more enjoyable for everyone involved.

SHELANDY dog grooming blower

Because long hair tends to tangle and pick up unwanted things, you might need to bathe your long-haired dog more frequently—and drying times might be pretty rough. A blow dryer can be a huge help in making sure your dog’s hair dries quickly and right (no tangles and knots here). This blow dryer has a flexible hose, allowing you to move around your dog with ease. It’s also highly adjustable, with a variety of nozzles and settings. And one of the best features—it’s relatively quiet, so it’s less likely to frighten your dog. We’ve tested it ourselves and been impressed with the results.
